A new WhatsApp scam is getting noticed. It targets users with fake wedding invitations, often sent by unknown numbers, that tempt you to download attachments containing malicious APK files.

WhatsApp Wedding Invitation Scam:
The wedding season is in full swing, and so are Cybercriminals. Hackers from unknown mobile numbers are sending fake wedding invitations to random people to steal their data. This scam contains a genuine-looking attachment that lures users to download it.
This attachment contains malicious APK files. When downloaded, the files install harmful apps and are used by cybercriminals to access users’ data and even control their smartphones.
In addition, Scammers use the stolen data to commit fraud, spam, and spread malware. Moreover, scammers lure victims with fraudulent loan offers with low interest rates and instant approvals to gain access to confidential financial data.
What Does The Police Say About WhatsApp Wedding Invitation Scam?
Narvir Singh Rathour, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Himachal Pradesh, has urged users to verify the sender’s identity, especially if the message comes from unknown numbers. He also warned against downloading files from untrusted sources, emphasizing the high-security risks posed by APK files.
Rathour urged the users to stay vigilant and protect themselves from cybercriminals and scams. In addition, he also advised the users to update their devices with the latest security patches and software.
Further, he urged users to enable two-factor authentication on WhatsApp and be watchful about suspicious emails, messages, and calls that seek personal information.
